What to expect
Dutch cities provide public toilets in busy areas, but they are less common than many visitors expect. Free-standing urinals such as Amsterdam's famous curly "krul" are often available day and night. Full toilets in stations, parking garages and department stores more often follow the venue's opening hours. Some locations may charge, so check the signs at the entrance.
Cafés, department stores and libraries
No public toilet nearby? Department stores such as HEMA usually have a customer toilet, public libraries can be a useful option during opening hours, and in cafés the polite route is to order something small and ask. Supermarkets usually do not have customer toilets.

“Waar is het toilet?” (Where is the toilet?) works everywhere. “WC” — pronounced way-say — is universally understood, and so is simply “toilet”.
